Blog > Here is to the Not-So-Luxurious Side of Real Estate.
I know that everyone sees the glossy listing photos, the videos, and the “Sold” signs—but let’s talk about the real behind-the-scenes hustle of being a real estate agent.
The other day I was at a closing and forgot I had to pick up a sign. We are in the middle of winter and I did not think about what was about to make or break my day! Frozen to the ground was my sign that needed to be removed.
Have you ever tried yanking a metal pole out of the ground on a good day, now add ice. Because the sign was frozen to the ground, I needed to add water in order to loosen the ice to get the sign out of the yard.
As I pulled and tugged, mud of course started to form. Mud and a great outfit does not make a perfect match. Ever tried yanking a sign out of solid ice while wearing a great pair of Freebird boots. It’s a workout. And let’s be real—sometimes the sign wins.
Hammering in signs and taking them out of the ground is just the beginning. I am known to play frogger on the weekends, dodging traffic as I put up and take down open house signs.
I spend hours on the phone—calling leads, negotiating deals, and getting hung up on more times than I would like to admit. I spend hours and hours in my car putting thousands of miles driving everywhere—to appointments, showings, inspections, closings, and back again. And if you know me, there has to be a coffee shop somewhere along the way.
That's not all. I am constantly checking my text making sure I never miss that next deal. Yet somehow I make the time to check my email because real estate doesn’t have a clock-in, clock-out schedule.
Yes, some days are a breeze and I make sure to take time out to spend quality time with my family. But the majority of my time is spent constantly dealing with last-minute items, fixing signs that got knocked over in the wind, and running to the store for light bulbs before a showing because every detail matters.
Real estate isn’t just about selling homes— and it's not always glamorous, but I love what I do—because at the end of the day, helping someone find a home makes it all worth it.
